Media Awards

The two best year12 production i thought were the best were 'The experiment' and 'Labrat'
Out the two if i was to choose one, I would say it would be 'The Experiment' because of how editing and the different shots that were being used.

Labrat

Film language:
                                                  Mise-en-scene:

At the start of the clip,  as the boy introduces himself and says how old he is and what school he goes to it helps the audience to identify with the boy, as the target audience would teenagers or even young adults, this helps even more because of the school environment they have shown which can also create a point of view with the boy and the character because the audience can identify themselves in the environment too. The narrative continues to be in a school environment because the audience can see the setting is in a classroom, using the props of of the chemistry equipment which highlights the interest the boy has and again allows the audience to identify with the actor. The use of the costume creates a professional look to the production and realistic.
The facial expression and the body language of the actor is done fantastically because it brings the production to be more realistic and allows the audience to be engage, which why its a good production in my perspective.
Overall, the mis-en-scene helps the narrative to be developed and noticeable towards the audience, using the props and how the character shows the different emotions throughout the production allows the audience to be engaged and into the production but also to have an identification with the protagonist.

                                                Cinematography:

In the production, the are a lot of camera framing, this includes having lots of close ups and medium shots. The close up shots were mainly used on the chemistry equipment, this draws attention to the little things of the object and it can show the importance of the object in a way, this shot can also acts as a point of view shot too because the audience are seeing what the actor is seeing and the focus the actor has upon the different objects in the chemistry lab he is using. They are also close ups of the protagonist which allows the audience to see the emotions the actor is feeling so it can help the audience to identify with him, the extreme close ups can also create this effect, as it draws attention to the object and creates an identification.
When the protagonist is talking to the camera, and when he's in the library but also in the setting of him in a medical room, medium close up shots are used which allows the audience to see the setting and the surrounds the protagonist is set in. Using these shots different make the production look professional and it compliments the scenes of the productions.
Using the high angles shots and low angles shot creates different effects as the director wants the audience to feel differently about the protagonist. At low angle shots, the protagonist feels in power and this was used in the chemistry lab as it links with the passion the actor has with it which why he feels in power. However the use of the high angle shots when the actor is in the library, the audience are automatically feel for the character as they see him at his lowest point and he feels vulnerable in that moment of time.

                                                          Sound

At the start of the production, the use of the diegetic sound of the birds tweeting and the breeze of the wind supports the visual scene and makes the audience aware that at the moment of time they the setting is set outdoor. There is then non-diegetic much which brings the mood of the scene to be serious, as this is played over the voice over of the diegetic sound it allows the audience to pay attention to what the protagonist is saying.

                                                              Editing
The main transition that was being used were straight cuts which allowed the audience to see different views of the surrounds and give them different perspectives. The use of the fade out and in where effective because it allowed the audience to not get confused with the flashbacks and the reality the protagonist was in during the production.

MCCAT
The use of media language techniques are really effective, because the narrative was clear and simple as it was easy to follow and understand.
The conventions of genre did come out through the mis-en-scene and the narrative, it gave the attention of it being drama. The drama element of was also added too by the the shot of the protagonist recording himself which gives the effect of a documentary type of production.
There was a lot of creativity, by the shots that were being used to the narrative because it can be  something a lot of teenagers can face and be effected by. It allowed the audience to pay attention to the little things to the objects and the surrounds being shown.
The technical proficiency was highlighted through editing, the use of the flashback sequence. Furthermore, the use of the close up shots of the actor was in the science lab, and the opening shots showed that they can use different effects to have an impact on the audience.

The experiment

Film Language
                                           Mis-en-scene

The choice of the camera shots allowed the audience to see the facial expression and the body language of the protagonists. This is effective because the audience can reflect on the narrative as the actors are showing their facial expression and the use of their body language to make the narrative more realistic and this way the audience can connect with story line. The constant show of the characters emotion can help the audience to identify with the character from the very start.
The use of the shots help us identify the surroundings and the setting, the setting of the forest creates a sense of isolation and emptiness which may reflect to what the character may be feeling and what to show to the audience.
The overall setting is dim and the bright lighting contrast the change in the narrative and when it develops.

                                                    Cinematography

To introduce the narrative, the text on the screen helped the audience understand roughly of what is going on. The extreme close ups are used mainly at the start of the scene to show to the audience the important information of the narrative. The medium close up of allow the audience to see the expressions and the body language of the character so they can create a identification with but also they can see the surroundings the character is in. The point of view shots are used frequently to help with the identification as the audience are so engaged to the production that they'd feel like that they are going through to what the character is. The pan is used when the protagonist is trying in a long shot so the audience can get an idea of the scene which creates tension in the narrative and creates an action code of her running. The tracking shot also helps build this tension. Using the close up shots allow the audience to pay attention to the little things and say what they could mean in the narrative.

                                                      Sound

At the opening scene, the use of the radio over graphics the sic-fi genre. And at the start  of the production, the way the production is being introduced gives the audience the realistic looking clip, on a professional level. Having the voice over on the video when she talking about a girl places the narrative as the images also synergy to what the girl is saying. The use of the diegetic sound go the video shows the importance to the protagonsit and the change in sound to change the effect by adding the non diegetic sound helps the audience to focus on something else.

                                                   Editing

Many of the straight cuts are used to help create the tension in slower motion. The use of the continuity editing help to create the narrative clearer so the audience can understand what is going on too. When editing they have made it clear to the audience by using the blur effect to when they are in reality or in a flashback during the narrative.

MCCAT -

the media language techniques were used strongly and effectively, the use of the editing and the shots allow the narrative to be clear and effect by also engaging the audience with the facial expressions so the audience can identify with the protagonist.
conventions were effective by the sound choice of the voice overs and the having the different use of the text on the screen which applies the genre of the production (sic-fi)
Creativity had a big impact on the production because the narrative was something different to any other media productions.
attention of detail was effective because they had made an impact on the audience as if they were actually in the set too, and the it created a big identification which helped the audience to be so engaged with the narrative.
Technical proficinecy was well as they added really effectively with the key conventions of the genre, as they added voice overs, graphics like text on the screen which made the production so thought out and effective.

What makes a good practical production.

I think the first thing that makes a good practical production is planning. Both of the productions that i thought were the two and even all the other productions seemed as they planned out everything and carefully thought out, which made the production look professional and the translations between all of the shots.

Furthermore, having a good narrative makes a good practical production. The reason is because if the narrative is clear and is something realistic to the target audience are watching then it makes them engaged into the production and its more realistic and the audience can create identification with the protagonist more quickly.

All of the productions were simple with what they have put in their productions. What made the productions good was that not many things were going on it was simple to understand the narrative and they didn't have any lots of shots going on that made the audience distracted. it was easy to follow and understand which is very important in making a good practical production.

Editing task

In this extract, the editing techniques give the audience number of different reactions towards the scene. Firstly, Hitchcock, uses a tracking shot, where the audience is followed by the lady when she goes into the hall, this creates an identification with the character as we see her point of view on things around her and we start to get familiar with her actions. Throughout the scene the directors have used continuity editing which allows the audience to understand what is going on the scene. The use of the straight cut is also effective between the lady and the protagonist; birds - they can be also classified as the villain because of how they storyline has leaded up too and they are the creates which could be harmful and are in this movie. By using this technique of the straight cut, to the audience it seems like a smooth transition between the protagonist and the lady. Another technique that is effect is the shot, reverse shot, because it creates the identification of the lady and her point of view, as this they can see the facial expression of the lady once she does see the birds that have gathered in the playground, which allows the audience to see her point of view of what she thinks of it when she finally looks back at the birds, this creates a dramatic irony as the character isn't aware of what is happening but the audience are. The background sound of the children singing brings a diegetic sound to the extract as is happening during the scene.  In the scene, the atmosphere seems dark which could represent the protagonist, as what they could present in the movie, but there is a time when the sun comes out but that is near the end of the extract which is when the lady has been confronted with the protagonist and she runs away to warn the children about the amount of birds they are in the playground, the use of sunshine could mean things are going to get better? Thought out the extract, the director uses various of shots, as we see the close up shot of the lady, the audience can tell the concern and shock on her face, the facial expression can help the audience to connect with the character and which could create an identification with the her character as her point of view. As the shots get closer to the lady face each time, it supports the idea of having tension in the scene. This can create a disequilibrium effect as the evil character keeps building up in the scene. At the end of the scene, when the lady is going towards the building, it creates a action code as there is a sense the story is going to developing into the narrative and something big could happen, in addition, as the lady is going into the building, it creates an enigma code also because it gives the audience an interest to keep watching the movie to see what happens next and how the narrative could develop. When looking at the character, you can see that she may be posh person because of her costume, and her body language, as it is very highly. The use of clothing shows the smart side of the character and they look professional which can support the idea of this character being very highly and posh. Having the elements of 'Mise-en-scene' it could help the audience to identify how they character is and how their personality could be in this movie which is effect as the audience can create an identification with her.

Cinematography

As soon as we start watching the movie clip, the first shot we see is a close up shot, the directors wanted the audience to pay attention towards the facial expression of the character and see what the characters emotions are in that moment of time.  This is virtual because it allows the audience to connect with the character emotionally and physically, as it can also create a point of view of the character and her identification throughout. For a while the scene continues to have close up shots as it could suggest that the directors would want the audience to pay attention to the little details they are shooting off as it could mean something important towards the movie or that particular scene. From the diegetic sound from the background we can tell they are in an outdoor environment because the effectiveness of the nature songs; birds tweeting. The the audience can tell if it is an outdoor surrounding is because of the medium shot being used. By using this shot, it allows the audience to see the setting the characters are in and the two subjects. You could argue that that by using a medium wide shot, you can see the space between the characters which could show how close they are towards each other and what their relation could be. Another way this scene is effective with the choice of shots they have chosen is by having the steadicam camera movement, the use of this allows the audience to see the characters point of view which creates the identification effect of the character towards the audience and allows the audience to follow the characters actions. Most importantly, one of the key techniques that they use which is effect is the shot-reverse shot-shot, this encourages the audience to identify the emotions and point of view of the protagonist. Most of the camera movement in this scene is a tracking shot, this is a smooth glad from a character to another character, this allows the audience to be witnessing every movement of the two main protagonist

Film Language: sound presentation & sound task.

In film clip above, the extract uses various of sound techniques. At the start of the clip, the music at the background is non-diegetic sound as it is added to create the dramatic/tension in the scene between the two characters. The lighting also supports the idea of having the dramatic look as it quite dark and as the top lighting allows the audience to accentuate the features of the two characters. The use of the thunder sound illustrates to us that it is diegetic sound the sound is coming from the story world which adds a realistic mood towards it. In addition, there is a sound bridge; when we hear the sound of the thunder at first and then few seconds later there is the visual view of thunder and lighting when the characters looks up. Throughout the extract, the sounds are parallel for the scene, as it is sounds that are approbate for that particular environment or its something we would for the scene and the sound to go together. The dialogue in the extract are diegetic as it is happening during the same sense. At the middle of the scene, the sound effects are quite dominate because of the effect it has within the scene, it draws the attention of the audience even more into the scene and makes the scene realistic.
